NATO to Establish FLF Headquarters in Finland

(MENAFN) NATO will establish a Forward Land Forces (FLF) headquarters in northern Finland, Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen announced Monday.

Hakkanen said he has selected Rovaniemi, located in the Lapland region, as the site for the Multinational Staff Element (MNSE) of the FLF. He noted that operations of the FLF Finland battle group will focus on Northern Finland and rely primarily on Rovaniemi and Sodankyla.

“Rovaniemi is the best place in Finland to locate a permanent FLF headquarters in terms of its synergy effects and reliance conditions,” Hakkanen said, adding that the headquarters will represent a permanent NATO presence in northern Finland.

According to the statement, the multinational headquarters is part of efforts to strengthen NATO’s deterrence and defense posture in its northern and Arctic regions. While the headquarters will be permanently stationed in Finland, multinational forces will be deployed in the country on an exercise basis or as required by the security situation.
